June is Pride Month: a time when the LGBTQ community can come together and reflect on our past, celebrate our present, and hope for our future. This month means different things to different people (even within the LGTBQ community) and I was inspired to write something after seeing an influx of comments and posts from other people asking, "Why is there no Straight Pride?" This question arises every year and it's something I would like to address.
🏳️🌈
The LGBTQ community is a minority community that continues to be marginalized, in spite of the tremendous progress towards equality that has been made. This year's Pride feels particularly significant and important considering the following:
🏳️🌈
The current president has once again chosen not to acknowledge Pride month.
🏳️🌈
There were at least 129 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across 30 states in 2017.
🏳️🌈
Conversion therapy is still legal in most states.
🏳️🌈
You can still be fired, and denied housing and other benefits, in most states for being gay.
🏳️🌈
Transgender people continue to be harassed, beaten, and even murdered. Already in 2018, there have been 12 transgender homicides reported.
🏳️🌈
My brief point is (and I say this with respect): there is no Straight Pride because every day is Straight Pride. To my knowledge, heterosexual people who identify as cisgender enjoy full benefits and protections within all fifty states and at the federal level that citizens belonging to the LGBTQ community do not. Federally recognized marriage equality was a huge step but we still have a long ways to go, and this month gives us a bigger platform to celebrate our progress, discuss important issues, and garner greater support from our ally communities.
🏳️🌈
But yes, it is also a time to celebrate on parade floats, wave rainbow flags, and dance the night away because, well, life is short, so why the heck not?!
🏳️🌈
I know I’ll be celebrating this year’s Pride with extra love in my heart because I’ll be enjoying it with Rayvon! Cheesy, but true! 😝 🌈
HAPPY PRIDE, EVERYONE!!!

I absolutely love this picture!! I have loved Rayvon sense he started on American Idol. I have seen Bridegroom it brought me to tears of course. Tom was an amazing strong person from what I saw and what people said. So is Alex what she went through I can’t even imagine what you both went through and may still struggle with your courage to go on and be a role model for not just the LGBT community but for everyone is incredible. I am glad you didn’t let what happened hold your life back but instead you allowed what happened to make you stronger. You inspire me and your love inspires me. I’m so sorry for your loss but I think Tom is looking down smiling and thinking he’s glad your happy and that Rayvon is the perfect person to get you through the rest of your life. You can have more then one love in your life and Tom will never be forgotten. He will be remembered for his story, his free spirit, compassion, and so much more. This movement this documentary started something it is bringing about change. I hope and pray for equally for everyone we have come so far. Thank you for being a voice for people who have trouble standing up for themselves. Also your dad was incredible how he in the end just wanted to make sure you knew how much he loves you and accepts you no matter what. I can’t imagine how scary it was at the time for your parents wanting to protect you and keep you safe. I’m sorry people threatened you I’m glad you gave Tom the funeral he deserved. He is in Heaven I know this. The God I know loves everyone no matter who they choose to be with. He loves you for your heart. Please continue to share your story and speak up for equality, we need more people like you in this world. If your ever feeling down remember the words I wrote because if you ever feel you have not made a difference or changed anyone’s life that’s not true I know you chang the life of everyone you meet, you changed mine.

Once again. You people have to ALWAYS SAY SOMEYHING SOOOO OUTTHERE ABOUT THE PRESIDENT. IT really looks like you people woukd get to know him and Us the people who voted for him. I have gays in my family. I have mixed colored in my family. But just as A HUMAN BEING I WAS BROUGHT UP. YPU DONT JUDGE PEOPLE OR DISRESPECT THEM BASED on what you THINK you know or HEARD. .. KNOW uour FACTS. THEN IN 4 YRS FROM NOW. I WILL COME BACK TO SEE IF MY PRESIDENT HAS LIKE PUT YOU ALL IN A GLASS BOTTLE ( NOT ) OR DID ANYTHING TO CAUSE U TROUBLE WITH YOUR GAY RELATIONSHIP . I CAN ALREADY bet you , people out in the public will give you plenty Grief , but I KNOW the President ( personally . i might add but you wont believe that ) and he would Listen or HELP YOU and yourCommunity if you only would BE HONEST AND STOP THE BS SPEWING LIES ABOUT HIM before you have a chance to know him. Just saying its sad to Know how YOU WANT RESPECT BUT YOU DONT WANT TO GIVE IT !

While progress is slow , it is moving forward. Change does not happen overnight. And I actually know a lot of gays who don't like the raunchy side of gay pride. So they opt out of it, lol

For me there is gay pride because I was taught to be ashamed of who I was. It took a long time for me to be proud of being gay.

At some point you need to step out of the victim role. While there may be prejudice against gays, it is becoming less & less
