It's time for a spotlight on Pluto!
@NASAWebb will be studying the dwarf planet and its moon Charon, among other objects in the Kuiper Belt. You can think of the Kuiper Belt as a graveyard of small and icy bodies leftover from the solar system's early days of planet formation. While Kuiper Belt Objects are very cold and faint, they glow in infrared light. As an infrared telescope, #NASAWebb will be able to study these objects through a technique called spectroscopy. (Read more at the link in our bio!)
This composite of enhanced color images of Pluto (lower right) and Charon (upper left), was taken by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft as it passed through the Pluto system on July 14, 2015. Pluto and Charon are shown with approximately correct relative sizes, but their true separation is not to scale.
