🪨 🧠 The 3 (or 2) phases of bouldering projects from a psychological perspective. 1. The flash attempt. If you don’t flash it, lucky you! You get to move onto the next two phases 😉 Obviously if a boulder is really hard for you a proper flash attempt might not be available and you can see the next phase as the first phase. 2. Exploration phase - this is all about learning the boulder and refining your beta/movement. The more challenging the boulder the longer you’ll spend in this phase. 3. Execution phase. This is where you actually give it attempts. If you spend too long in the execution phase you might want to think about going back to exploration. We can bring different mindsets, tools and strategies to each of these phases. What I find interesting is how to know when to transition between phases 2 and 3. If you transition too soon the challenge level in the execution phase will be too high. If you transition too late, you’re not optimising the process and more importantly you’re less likely to access flow because the challenge level will be too low. What do you think of these phases? Do you tend to transition too soon or too early? I tend to transition too early as impatient non-perfectionist. I imagine more perfectionist personality types will tend to transition too late. These phases are also useful for route climbing too but I’m bouldering atm so that’s what I’m thinking about 😆 @blackdiamond @lasportivagram @strongmind.climbing @angus.kille
