@mhammed_kilito (M’hammed Kilito) wants you to see something important: “Before It’s Gone.”

“I felt an urgent need to capture and share the story of oases and their inhabitants when I found out that these ecosystems, and the people who rely on them, are facing numerous challenges, including droughts, desertification, water scarcity and overuse of natural resources,” says the documentary photographer.

His long-term project, which shows the intricate relationships between human activity and the natural environment in these vital regions, was included in this year’s @worldpressphoto regional winners. The recognition is significant for M’hammed as it was a previous @worldpressphoto exhibition that inspired him to pursue a career in photography.

“My hope is to inspire viewers and decision-makers to appreciate and care for these remarkable and complex ecosystems and to take action to preserve them and inspire change for a sustainable future.”
