In the world’s largest wetland, humans are sparse. But this old river boat operating in one of South America’s most remote stretches attracts just about all of them.

There are the Mormon missionaries, the former Mormon missionaries turned Instagram influencers, the prisoners and the police, and hundreds more who rely on this boat as their ferry, supermarket, freight shipper and bar.

For 44 years, the 130-foot white wooden vessel, the Aquidaban, has been the only regular ferry service in the region, traveling 500 miles up and down the Paraguay River Tuesdays to Sundays. Now it may disappear.
