HYPEBEASTさんのインスタグラム写真 - (HYPEBEASTInstagram)「In 2012, Virgil Abloh was looking to rebrand his street-level label Pyrex Vision into a more luxury-leaning entity. @off____white would be the name of the brand overhaul – but the hybrid label needed a distinctly different identity in order to morph into the luxury behemoth it's regarded as today.⁠ ⁠ Throughout his tenure at Off-White and Louis Vuitton, Virgil was obsessed with iconography and UK culture. Abloh also had an undergrad degree in civil engineering, and a Masters' in architecture. ⁠ ⁠ Fuelled by a love of both those subjects – while wanting to interpolate the crosswalks, road signs and iconography of everyday life into his brand – Virgil may well have been influenced to use an unusual source of inspiration for his big brand refresh: Glasgow City Airport.⁠ ⁠ The OG Glasgow City Airport logo was developed in the early 1960s. The initial impression of the logo is a white cross made of 4 diagonal arrows pointing outwards – also used in Off-White's now-iconic logo. ⁠ ⁠ Arrows are recognized internationally as a symbol of direction and movement. The logo's directional arrows, which cleverly form the Scottish Saltire flag at the center, encapsulate the sign’s meaning: moving forward and crossing borders in and out of Scotland.⁠ ⁠ Following their revered work on British road signs, Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir, Kinneir Calvert Associates, were commissioned to create Glasgow Airport’s sign system by the airport architects in 1964. Calvert would design the striking logo, which was also used on the airport’s various ground equipment and vehicles.⁠ ⁠ It’s easy to see why Virgil would also want to emulate a similar feeling of progression with his new brand logo. As an advocate for industrial design, Duchampian irony and discerning logo flips throughout his work, Glasgow City Airport’s old logo seems like it was the perfect fit for the identity behind Virgil’s “architectural apparel”: Off-White.⁠ ⁠ Did Virgil Abloh “BORROW” the Off-White logo from Glasgow City Airport?
