Next in our series, I visited Sharon and her service dog, Edward (but he goes by Eddie), to learn about her role as a nurse in the army for 10 years, the difficulties she faced when reintegrating back to civilian life after her deployment in Iraq, and how Eddie has stayed by her side through it all.

America’s VetDogs’ mission is to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and independence. They raise, train, and place assistance dogs for veterans with physical disabilities; guide dogs for individuals who are blind or have low vision; service dogs to help mitigate the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder; and facility dogs as part of the rehabilitation process in military and VA hospitals. These dogs immeasurably change the lives of the veterans who are lucky enough to receive them, often supplanting the need for many pharmaceuticals.

Each dog costs about $50,000 from start to finish, and they provide these dogs at no cost to the veterans. Veterans consistently turn to GoFundMe for help affording and caring for service dogs - a cause that is not currently supported by the VA.
