This is the prototype for the first computer mouse! Douglas Engelbart and his colleagues at Stanford Research Institute (SRI) were pioneers in human-computer interaction. A lot of the tech innovations we use today were envisioned and made real in Engelbart's lab in the 1960s.
In 1964, they built a hand-held pointing device to manipulate images and text on a monitor's screen. The prototype is a wooden box with two perpendicular metal wheels, a selection button, and a wire connection to the processor.
The mouse is on loan to our @SI_Invention from SRI International and goes on display in #PlacesOfInvention on July 1.
Join us at 2:30 p.m. EDT for a discussion with Internet pioneers. Watch the webcast: bit.ly/netage15 (link in bio). ???#InternetAge #Retro #ComputerHistory
