Photograph by @Thomas Peschak Beginning in the 1960s a handful of small isolated villages in the Philippines became the epicenter of the global seahorse fishery. In 2001, scientists recorded a 90% decline in seahorse catches and by 2004 the government had banned all seahorse fishing in the Philippines. Approximately 80% of seahorse fishing communities fall below the poverty threshold and a single seahorse can be worth the equivalent of a 1kg bag of rice. Therefore, some fishermen continue to harvest seahorses, albeit in a more clandestine manner. Every year more than 20 million seahorses are shipped to China from fisheries all over the world for use in traditional medicine.
