Armed with a duster, a vacuum, and a special "hake" brush, Curator Tim Winkle and colleague gently clean the fire pumper on display on our first floor. 19th century pumpers like these were pulled to fires by hand, where 20 or more firefighters would use it to pump water onto the blaze. It could throw over 100 gallons a minute onto a fire from a distance of 150 feet! ?? Notice its ornate decorations?
