Kick-ass female superheroes are a common theme in Beth Sotelo’s (@midimew) work. And the comic artist from California, who does coloring for DC and Aspen Comics, is doing her own butt-kicking in the industry — which she credits, in part, to an important moment that happened in high school. “I dropped art as my elective until my teacher, Mr. Lee Samuels, called my house and demanded my return,” she says. “I thought art was just for fun, but after that I learned it was a valuable skill to keep working at.” For her coloring work, Beth built herself her own desktop PC, and she uses an old version of Photoshop. For penciling, she uses a piece of medium-density fiberboard and some binder clips. “I sit on the couch with the board in lap, mechanical pencil in hand and my dachshund, Colonel Mustard, at my side editing,” she says.
