From left: Fred Sortino, Sloe, Fred Flynn and Moe at Pier 95 in #Manhattan in May 1957. “Two well-traveled turtles were back in New York yesterday after having spent nearly 16 years in Bermuda,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. The turtles were sent away while the @nyaquarium was constructed at Coney Island, where their handlers worked. The photographer Arthur Brower shot their happy return to the city. The elderly pair had traveled first-class, “in keeping with their position,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported. They “lounged comfortably on moist burlap, the turtle equivalent of deep Oriental rugs. Periodically, attendants would stop by and solicitously squeeze cool water on them.” We’re sharing photos of seafaring animals like Sloe and Moe from the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #archives for #nytweekender. #??
