This is what it looked like when I had to use my underwater housing to push off of an aggressive 8000 elephant seal bull that treated me as a rival breeding male. I accidentally hit the shutter in my attempt to get away. I never approached the seal and it came shooting over to me, defending the entire beach area. Luckily, I was in the shallows and could quickly exit the water and learn from my mistake without injury. The seal went back to its harem. I get asked by other photographers if they should get in the water with elephant seals in Antarctica during breeding season. The answer is no. They are like getting in the water with hippos. I would love to swim with them in the open ocean while they are feeding and their behavior is not being fueled by hormones. Elephant seals beat up on each other all day long but I still do not want to play a role in affecting their behavior. I even watched bulls grab 1500 pound females in the surf zone and drown them in an attempt to breed. I should have known better and now I do.
