Today in 1917: Amelia Himes Walker is jailed for "obstructing traffic" while picketing the White House for the vote. She received this "Silent Sentinel" pin to honor her service, engraved, "Without Extinction is Liberty." The reverse: "For service in the cause of the freedom of women Presented by the National Woman's Party." The phrase "Without Extinction is Liberty" is drawn from a Walt Whitman poem, "By Blue Ontario’s Shore." (I'll paste a quote in the comments.) Amelia spent 60 days in the Occoquan Workhouse, where she and other suffragists were abused.
