This queen bee is part of an experimental breeding program at the USDA bee lab in Baton Rouge. Her tongue is sticking out to receive a meal from one of the nurse bees that is attending her.

Researchers found that some honeybees have a natural resistance to varroa mites, which are one of the biggest problems bees are currently dealing with. These varroa resistant bees are able to detect when their young are infected and they kill their own young to prevent the mites from spreading. The goal of this USDA program is to breed a line of bees that is mite resistant while retaining all of the traits that make them attractive to beekeepers (honey production, gentleness, winter hardiness).
