"In 1969, on assignment for @Rolling Stone, I first photographed #MilesDavis in his Manhattan home. Afterwards, driving along the Hudson River in his Ferrari, en route to the legendary Gleason’s Gym, Miles chided me, ‘Baron, you are so out of shape. C’mon, man, we’re going to the gym and you’re gonna do some rounds with me in the ring.’ Among other topics we talked about during the drive was his love of boxing and how it related to the way he played his trumpet. ‘Listen carefully to my music; I play like I box. You can actually hear the jabs, the feints, the crosscuts, the uppercuts. And you can imagine that I’m boxing when I’m playing.’ My sense is that boxing was also a reflection of his personality. Miles was an angry guy — in a way, his music often was too. Perhaps boxing may have been another way for him to deal with his many hostilities, to release them in the gym. Also in the gym he gifted me an amazing photo op.” As told to @Rolling Stone by photographer @baronwolman
