Most of the photographers who contribute to the @ナショナルジオグラフィック feed could probably look back on their work and name one or two stories that had been milestones in their careers. For me, the pictures for the book #FridayNightLights was a milestone. It is hard to believe that this book about the culture of football in west Texas and a school systems' confused priorities was released 25 years ago. I quit a job at the Philadelphia Inquirer, one of the best newspapers in the country, to take on this project. It was a significant gamble at the time. This photo is of Mike Winchell, the #quarterback of the #PermianPanther watching a pep rally before a game shows the isolation that this 18 year old felt as the leader of the team. It is my favorite picture in the story, and I knew I had it when I shot it. That happens sometimes and we all long for those moments.
