What is conservation lab intern Kayla Silvia doing? Sorting tiny fragments of silk from a 135-year-old flag. Prolonged exposure to sunlight had caused the flag to fade into various shades of light blue, and bleeding dyes created green stains in spots. Our conservation lab team used these color differences to sort and match the silk fragments. They also examined fractures in the fibers to puzzle the flag back together.
