The entrance to the emergency room at University Medical Center New Orleans, a $1.1 billion hospital that was built largely with federal funds directed to the city after #HurricaneKatrina. Run by a private operator under contract with the state, the hospital is being held up as the centerpiece of a much-improved health care system for the poor in #NewOrleans. But its ambitions go far beyond that, with aims to provide high-end specialty care to privately insured patients in the state and beyond. @edmundfountain photographed University Medical on #nytassignment.
