Stoked to be taking over the @newyorkerphoto feed for the week where I will be sharing images, anecdotes, quotes and behind the scenes captions from Meru. @MeruFilm opens in select theaters nationwide on August 14th. Give us a follow at @merufilm for more images and check in at MeruFilm.com for details on openings and theaters near you. #MeruFilm Travel to Meru begins in the lowland plains of Delhi, heads up through the deep gorges and winding roads of the Himalayan foothills and eventually to Gangotri where the road ends. This sacred village is the access point to the the headwaters of the Ganges river and the granite throne room of the Hindu deities, the Garwhal Himalaya. While none of us are practicing Hindus, we (myself, @conrad_anker and @renan_ozturk) happily accepted a blessing from Swami Sundaranand. He was a photographer and climber in his youth and also a reputed yogi who had audiences with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and who at one point taught yoga to Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India. He was encouraging of our journey and sent us along with a mantra to chant during difficult times. We didn’t think much of it when he shared it with us, but we ended up finding great comfort in it and repeating it much more than we had imagined. Here Sundaranand sits in his humble abode, a sort of custodian of the town's magnificent waterfall he lives above. Surrounding him, are pieces of wood shaped like the Sanskrit symbol for Om he’s collected over the years.
