A Snowy Plover nests on a dry former salt pond at Eden Landing, near Hayward, CA. The threatened plover likes to nest on the California beaches, but is very sensitive to human development. When some plovers started nesting inland in the salt ponds in the South Bay, researchers decided to add oyster shells to help camouflage the nests from predators. I took this photo with the help of a Pocket Wizard remote trigger sitting in a car 300 feet away. The adult plover would not sit on the eggs until I got in the car and as soon as I opened the door it ran away. It certainly is very aware of humans anywhere near.
