Well-formed emeralds preserved in their natural, crystalline state are tremendously rare. This 632-carat specimen, measuring 2 1/2 inches by 1 inch (6.3 x 2.5 cm) is one of the largest gem-quality emeralds in the world. Known as the Patricia emerald, this specimen is truly unique. Most uncut emeralds have 6 sides, but this stone is dihexagonal, or 12-sided.
Find the Patricia Emerald in the Museum's Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems.
