"I came right back and opened up.” St. Claude Avenue is the commercial corridor that divides Holy Cross from the rest of the Lower Ninth Ward and connects the parishes of Orleans and St. Bernard’s; its businesses were critical to the recovery of Holy Cross. According to state statistics, there were 12,695 small businesses in New Orleans before Katrina. Only six months later, some 2,000 reopened. Of these, fewer than 12 were located in Holy Cross and the Lower Ninth Ward.
