Photo by @stefanounterthiner | European bison (Bison bonasus) were hunted to extinction in the wild: the last wild one was killed in 1927 in Poland's Bialowieza forest, where I took this photograph. The species survived only in a few European zoological gardens. As a result of reintroductions and introductions, there are now thousands in the wild, all descended from the few dozens individuals kept in captivity.
