Often on Instagram we just scroll through pictures and keep it moving. We don't take the time to find out who is in the photo or the story behind it. Yesterday, the photo on the left popped up on my feed and all I thought was that dress reminds me of a dress I wore and really dug. Thankfully I took the time to read the story about the woman in the dress. Meet @ash_burnham. Ashley is a Cree woman from the Enoch First Nation in Alberta. This weekend she made history by becoming the first Canadian to win Mrs Universe and the first First Nations contestant EVER. Ashley has openly shared her story of physical and sexual abuse she encountered in her youth and has credited her Cree culture as the healing path through the pain. Majority of her work centers on giving First Nations youth opportunities to talk safely about issues they face and ways to overcome them. She knows that healing is a lifelong process and asks the young girls to keep in touch with her and keep working on loving and appreciating themselves. She has done big things for the young native youth of Canada and this platform will only amplify her voice and her work. I see you Ashley, my fellow Albertan girl.
