Before she even acceded the throne, The Queen had pledged her devotion to her future role in a speech made on her 21st birthday, saying, 'There is a motto which has been borne by many of my ancestors - a noble motto, "I serve"' From the earliest days, Her Majesty took up her new role with energetic commitment.

In 1953, The Queen set out to complete the Commonwealth tour she had begun before the death of her father. With The Duke of Edinburgh she visited Bermuda, Jamaica, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, Ceylon, Uganda, Malta and Gibraltar.
