Il Vittoriale the final home of Gabriele D'Annunzio, one of my favorite writers. Mussolini, felt threatened by him and so gifted him this home. In reference to D'Annunzio he said: if you can't remove it, cover it with gold.
D'Annunzio personalized the home, creating two waiting rooms for guests he liked, and guests he disliked (eg: Mussolini or "Mask Wearers"). Inscribed on a plaque in the mask room was:
To the visitor:
Do you bring the mirror of Narcissus?
This is leaded glass, o mask maker.
Adjust your masks onto your face,
But mind that you are glass against steel.
