"The power of this piece derives in part from the tension held in its associative relationship to both beauty and horror." - Curator Susan Thompson

In the final gallery of our current retrospective of Colombian artist #DorisSalcedo, visitors encounter her room-size installation "A Flor de Piel". This monumental red fabric is made of hundreds of individual rose petals that the artist painstakingly stitched together by hand. Salcedo created this work in homage to a Colombian nurse who was kidnapped and tortured to death after providing care to injured parties on both sides of Colombia’s protracted civil war. The piece developed as a simple intention of making a flower offering to a victim of torture, in an attempt to perform the funerary ritual that was denied to her. Take a closer at the work through our curator's eye at guggenheim.org/blogs.
