One if the great parts of my job is being able to go into the back rooms of some of the best museums in the world. This detail shot of these blue-throated barbet (Megalaima asiatica), which were collected and described by Alfred Russel Wallace is a great example. Wallace a Victorian specimen hunter, worked in Bali and Borneo for years and became aware of the different location of certain species...and developed the idea of the Wallace line which details the Geographical distribution of animals. While suffering from a fever in #Lombok, Wallace wrote a paper about the #theoryOfEvolution & mailed it to #Darwin. Together they published the #TheoryofEvolution via #Naturalselection. The Asian barbet has bright green, blue & red plumage, seen across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Barbets and toucans are a group of near passerine birds with a world-wide tropical distribution. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills; this species eats fruits and insects.
Wallace is best known for independently conceiving the theory of evolution through natural selection; his paper on the subject was jointly published with some of Charles Darwin's writings in 185​8. This prompted Darwin to publish his own ideas in On the Origin of Species.
