Over the next couple months I'm going to be posting some tips for the #fabercastellacademy, follow along and see all the other great tips by some of my favorite illustrators. I wanted to approach it not in terms of process which beginners can waste a lot of time with, and talk about ideas and concepts which seems to be the main thing my students always a hard time wrapping their head around.
I'm going to introduce several new concepts I'm exploring to stretch myself creatively by using approaches outside of my normal comfort zone. My hypothesis is that this strategy will yield a greater advancement in my illustration evolution than if I were to only concentrate on process.
This concept is my new Illustration Cover Band., AKA #sturgillustrationICB. They are going to try and play the hits, inspired by some of my favorite illustrators, both contemporary and historic. I will always credit the artist I’m covering, @jamesjarvis and @marcus_oakley here, like a garage band covers Nirvana while gradually injecting their own perspectives/experiments until they become the next Nirvana. (or in my case I'll be realistic and aim for Tiny Tim). ????? What illustrators inspire you?
