belfast
crumlin road jail, originally known as belfast jail, was completed in 1846. the "gaol" is an outstanding example of victorian penal architecture and planning.
it was the first prison in ireland to be designed for "the separate system" of confinement, whereby prisoners were permanently separated from each other, and never allowed to meet or converse.
