Ptarmigans are easier to spot in spring than in the rest of the year. They sit on the top of rocks that project from the melting snow and control their territory that they occupy for the mating season high up in the mountains. The male's red eye comb is a fine-tuned "barometer" that fills with blood when his mate is around.
