Photo by Tyrone Turner (@tyronefoto) A Brown Pelican spreads its wings as it cares for its young on Cat Island in coastal Lousiana in April, 2012. The island was disintegrating, eroding because of subsidence, but also because of the impact of the BP oil that coated the area two years earlier. 2012 was the last year that the island supported nesting by the pelicans...what is left now are dead mangrove branches sticking out of a slice of sand. This week, BP settled with the U.S. federal government and four gulf states for about 20 billion dollars- that sounds like a lot of money, but it is spread out over 15 years...and effective coastal restoration projects are very expensive. The next step is to be vigilant about how this money is spent, and how it can help the critical coastal areas as well as the communities which depend on them. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #louisiana #wetlands #brownpelican #plaquemines #catisland
