This image is from Inferno, a series that investigates Times Square as a human experience: as a destination that is sought for the feelings it elicits, for its symbolic status on the cutting-edge of modernity, and for its unique character in the context of other world-class destinations. Using Leica’s Noctilux at the .95/f aperture, the environment is melted into a mosaic of colorful lights, focusing attention instead on the visitors themselves. Standing in awe, estranged, laughing, even distressed, the images sample the experiences of both tourists and locals as they pass through the enamoring spectacle of lights. Lit in every color and from every direction, the portraits speak to a context that is wholly unique; photographs impossible to reproduce outside of the moment and location in which they are captured, and packed with an emotional complexity that is obscure, yet immediately identifiable.
