Just re-watched one of my favorites; AWAY FROM HER. Having long been a fan of Alice Munro's writing, I can't imagine her short story adapted by any hands other than those of the capable Sarah Polley, then only 28 years old. She infuses every frame with simple grace. This isn't a saccharine, idealized love like The Notebook, which also touches on Alzheimer's. This is messy, human-- a world we recognize, lit by blinding winter light, and populated by fully realized, three dimensional characters, down to the last nurse.
In this surprising, intimate, unconventional portrait of a marriage, Polley examines the meaning of love, selflessness, and what we choose to forget. Julie Christie is luminous and complex in every second. Incredibly tender, delicate, and sometimes brutal, this is a film that will stay with you.
