(I'm not good with time or dates. Insulin was discovered in 1920, (thank you Google) so I consider myself very lucky. I mostly remember my mother's face as she watched my father drive me away to the doctor's office in London, Ontario. She had to commentate a fashion show that evening (she was a local television celebrity) and I was obviously in bad shape. She looked lost and frightened and her expression haunts me to this day. Type 1 is a family disease, everyone is affected in a major way. I decided from an early age that I wasn't going to let diabetes affect my plans to become a performer and I'm still lucky enough to be doing what I love to do. I knew that I had to take an active part in my life journey and it meant more than testing urine and taking shots. It meant taking time to be grateful, accepting what was happening and knowing that I was more than diabetes. I have to remember this every day.
