After 30 years of planning, Alberto #Burri's expansive land art memorial "Grande Cretto" is finally complete. The massive concrete piece, first conceived by the artist in 1985, serves as a memorial to the town of Gibellina in Sicily, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1968. An enormous shroud of white cement covers the ruins of the town, and fissures function as pathways that wind through an area of roughly 20 acres. As part of the Alberto #Burri retrospective, the Guggenheim has commissioned Dutch filmmaker Petra Noordkamp to document Burri's land art memorial. The film captures Grande Cretto as an experiential work of art filled with a sense of place and history. See the film on Ramp 6 of the museum through January 6.
