A boy watched funerals in Austria last month of four family members found dead in a meat truck that was smuggling migrants. Seventy-one migrants suffocated within about 90 minutes after they squeezed into the truck’s airless refrigeration chamber. The discovery riveted attention on the human tidal wave of migrants crashing into Europe. It also raised questions about both the cruelty of the smugglers and the desperation of their clients.
