early this morning, after a night of humid restlessness, I strolled the near empty streets of the alfama -a labyrinth of unmarked unnamed places but the bakeries always give themselves away - yards ahead the air is heavy with the smell of yeasty burnt toast and caramelized sugar - i could just about catch a glimpse through tiny dark windows of dazzling pastelaria cooling on counters -
