“Bricks, knocked down structures, tree roots, streets without destination. You can feel a mix of nostalgia and sadness, and know you will never be able to go back and visit this town,” says Vanessa Bell (@cremedelacremeba), a British journalist living in Argentina, describing what’s left of Villa Epecuén.

Up until November 1985, Epecuén was a tourist town 334 miles (538 kilometers) southeast of Buenos Aires at the edge of a salt lake, chosen by thousands of travelers as their vacation spot. But heavy rains caused a dam to break and the town was swallowed up by slow-growing flood waters. Over the past few years, the water has receded and the town has re-emerged. This week marks 30 years since the natural disaster changed Epecuén forever.
“It’s difficult to take coherent photos of the chaos. There’s no order, no symmetry,” says Vanessa, who recently spent two days exploring the ghostly landscape. “I felt I was there for a week or a month, time runs in a different way.”
