The Imperial Valley, often referred to as California's Salad Bowl, hosts a half million-acre, billion-dollar farm economy that soaks up massive amounts of water. Controlled irrigation is only one example of how the area depends on water for its economic survival. Geothermal plants, shown here bordering the growing fields, use a network of deep wells drilled in the geothermal field to transfer water heated by the earth's mantle to power electrical generators. The electricity is then sold to the local power utility and put on the grid.
