When María Bernal found out her group, the Mexican trio Kaay (@kaayoficial), had been nominated for a Latin Grammy, she was with her dad at his hospital bed. “It’s weird, just the duality of life,” she says. “The good thing is he actually got to hear the news before he went away.”
She was able to tell him about the honor –– and sing one of the band’s songs, “Para Cuando No Esté” (“For When I Am Gone”) –– right before he passed.

Mariá started Kaay with Renée Suárez and Cecy Leos eight years ago when they were still students. With tonight’s awards show, they are on the verge of the biggest honor of their careers. “We were expecting it for the last album,” says Renée, laughing.
