Photograph by @paulnicklen // Diving through complex layers and channels of multiyear ice in the Beaufort Sea while on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. In this world of constantly shifting and drifting sea ice, we had to use safety lines in order to be able to find our dive hole. The water temperature was -1.5C (29.3F) and our regulators constantly wanted to freeze. Not only do you have to stay focused in such diving conditions but you have to try and find a way to create story-telling images of a high enough quality for the discerning eyes of National Geographic’s editors and audiences. This image never made the cut but it reminds me of this beautiful, blue, thick, old sea ice that lives for many years. An entire ecosystem of life depends on this ice; from the tiniest creatures like copepods and amphipods to the seals and polar bears. Scientists predict that the Arctic will be completely void of sea ice in the summer months in the next 10 to 30 years. Let’s hope that #COP21 works towards mitigative solutions on reducing our footprint. #followme me on @paulnicklen to see more of my polar images.
