Did you know saltwater bathing didn’t gain popularity in the U.S. until the second half of the 19th century? The activity was so new that the 1880 travel guide Percy’s Pocket Dictionary of Coney Island included detailed swimming instructions. Many people went to Coney Island to try out the unfamiliar sport by wading in the shallow waters or clinging to “life ropes” tied to stakes in the ground. #foreverconey #tbt
