Photo by @mattiasklumofficial A nice morning stretch routine... A very cooperative polar bear female stetches before wandering off on the ice flows near the Nordenskiöld glacier. Polar bear paws are obviously perfect for roaming the Arctic ice. Go to @mattiasklumofficial to see how she, together with her adorable cubs, fell a sleep a stones throw from me and my cameras. Their paws measure up to 31 centimeters (12 inches) across and help distribute weight when treading on thin ice. When the ice is exceptionally thin, polar bears extend their legs far apart and lower their bodies to distribute their weight even more. They are great at placing each paw precisely and quietly when stalking seals. As you can see, her claws are thick and curved, sharp and very strong. Each claw can measure more than 5.1 centimeters (two inches) long. Polar bears obviously use their claws to catch and hold prey and to provide traction on the ice. Polar bears live along the edges of the ice, where they can find seals. They depend on sea ice, on which they can hunt seals, rest and breed. Due to the warming climate, summer ice continues to decrease and is also melting for a longer period, preventing polar bears from going out to get food. The bears must swim or walk longer distances to keep track with the shrinking ice! #cop21 #svalbard #polar #morningstretch #yoga #claws #strenght #polarbears #arctic #savingthearctic #climatechange #bwsp #expedition #mattiasklum #cubs #mom #predator @natgeocreative @bigworldsmallplanet @polarbearsinternational @thephotosociety @natgeo @mattiasklumcollection
