This landscape by the Catalán painter, Manuel Cuyàs Agulló is a rare example of history painting in late colonial Puerto Rico. It depicts a day in the 1898 Spanish-American War after U.S. troops landed in Guánica, on Puerto Rico’s southern coast, en route to the island’s Spanish capital city (and #FranciscoOller’s birthplace) San Juan. At least three U.S. naval ships are visible in the distance, carefully identified by waving American flags.
