For my generation of the 70s you pretty much knew where we were every sat afternoon. For Philly that all came to an end in 76 when #SoulTrain was suddenly on at 1am. Thank god my parents were hip enough to not confine me to regular 6 yr old kid rules.---actually I take that back: they were strict but they were fair. Most importantly they were cool. deal was made: I was in bed 930pm every saturday night (bath water started mid #LoveBoat) HOWEVER: Because they invested heavily in my musical education I was allowed to set the alarm to 12:30am---which allowed me to run downstairs to watch the 2nd music guest selection on #SNL & also make some #JiffyPop (wait that's the real mystery: what kid is not allowed to watch regular tv, but trustworthy enough to turn gas stove on & cook popcorn w 0 supervision?)--most #SNL cologists reminisce over the sketches. But next to #MidnightSpecial (music show on friday nights after a 90 min Tonight Show at 1am) SNL gave me my 1st taste of what wasn't in my daily fm blackradio diet: #LeonRedbone #FrankZappa #AlJarreau #PhoebeSnow & #GilScottHeron. Then #SoulTrain (scary dancing animated train & #JoeCobb yellin in my dark living room) did the rest. That was my childhood tv allowance til I was about 11-12. This weekend I was fortunate enough to provide music services to both institutions in a 24 hr period (snl afterparty 12-4somethin ran home & packed. Head to JFK to LA & then spun Soul Train's annual reunion/toy drive party. Both events were magically overwhelming one moment #Macca is praising & quoting a book you wrote then #DamitaJoFreeman is winking at you. All the cast members you grew up watchin are dancing to you spinnin #KoolAndTheGang. Then #CherylSong is winking at you. I've had a mighty #bucketlist DJ moment in the past few. But this 24hr #SoultraiNightLive task took the cake. So happy about this past weekend.
