J.T. Batts Wishbone hanger, 1910s. Before Americans were trying to clean out their closets, they were filling them up with fashionable new ready-to-wear clothes (as opposed to custom-made outfits). And with more clothes to sell, department stores needed to compete at the retail display game: men's suits were decidedly more appealing on hangers than stacked on shelves.
At home, hangers freed up space and prevented wrinkling so that Americans could store a variety of new styles.
