The ephiphytic bromliads clinging on to the branches, waves caressing the beach, the light. Fantastic place! The Atlantic Forest still remains extraordinarily rich in biodiversity and endemic species. Unfortunately many are today threatened with extinction. Nearly 40 % of its "higher" plants and up to 60 % of its vertebrates are endemic species, meaning they are found only here and nowhere else in the world. More than 250 species of birds, mammals and amphibians have become extinct as a result of human activity in the past 400 years.
