9. Olivia Wilde, “Meadowland” "If I bang the drum any louder, I’m going to break the damn thing but here’s one more for the road. Olivia Wilde’s work in Reed Morano’s haunting debut “Meadowland” is a performance very little actresses could have pulled off. Internalizing the anger and grief that absorbs a young mother, Wilde’s commitment goes beyond what most actresses attempted to accomplish this year but didn’t come close. If this was 2005, Wilde would probably be winning this in a walk. It’s the type of performance that hawks back to past Best Actress winners but as Oscar evolves, so does its tastes. A smaller, independent film struggles to be seen against bigger studio productions during the screener rush that happens during the holiday break. The catch here is, there’s no record of screeners making it to AMPAS or any other voting groups. That would explain its absence thus far. VOD will be the way to go if AMPAS is interested.
